Ancient Roman and Greek gods and goddesses pop up all the time in mobile strategy games, along with the usual figures from Norse mythology, European history, Ancient Egypt, and the Far East. 

Julius Caesar, Thor, and Sun Wukong are all fixtures on the scene. The Mesoamericans, not so much. 

Quetzal puts that right with a novel Aztec setting involving a cast of gods, goddesses, and mythological creatures that you may well be meeting for the first time. 

Developed by Sandbag Games, Quetzal is a card-battler that sees you exploring Tenochtitlan, the ancient capital of the Aztec Empire, and descending into Mictlan, the underworld of Aztec mythology,

There are more than 60 different Creature, Spell, and Counter cards to collect in Quetzal, all of them featuring their own unique properties and effects, and all of them based on different gods and monsters. 

Cards are upgradeable, of course, with each upgrade increasing their potency. Plus, you can upgrade your base to unlock the game’s various different modes and fill your coffers with ever greater quantities of loot. 

If you’ve ever tried your hand at Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic: The Gathering, or Hearthstone you’ll be on fairly familiar ground with Quetzal’s addictive turn-based duelling system. Not entirely familiar ground, though, since Sandbag Games has thrown in a few of its own twists. 

There are lots of tricks and tactics to master as you attempt to whittle your opponent’s life down to zero, and you’ll be able to sink countless hours into mastering Quetzal’s multifaceted combat.

Fortunately, you can play it offline so there’s nothing to stop you playing it whatever your connectivity situation.
