Breaking the Fourth Wall

The game ramps up the scares, somewhat breaking the fourth wall as you have to duck and cower away from your screen in fear… literally. If a monster detects your presence via your webcam, it attacks. When an entity pops up, you have to quickly move before it can see you.

This isn’t the only purpose for your webcam though! As mentioned above, you also need to open doors by scanning your face, adding a layer of realism to Eyes Never Wake. In short, you can’t sit deliberately out of sight forever as the game requires you to show your face at times.

Your real-world physical self has an impact on how the game plays out, making it one of the most immersive horrors I’ve seen in a while. As well as the camera, your microphone also listens to you, so you have to stay silent and be stealthy!

Forget VR

It adds a physical nature to the horror genre, which is typically only seen in VR titles. Instead of hooking yourself up to a VR headset with motion tracking, all you need is a PC or gaming laptop and a webcam. This makes it much more accessible to a wider audience.

Lore-wise, nobody should have access to this game. You step out of bounds and somehow find yourself in an area that the public should not have access to. While there isn’t a huge backstory, the lack of information adds to the unsettling mystery of it all.

Despite the webcam feature being the main appeal of Eyes Never Wake, you can opt to turn it off via the in-game settings. And if you’re worried about the game storying your images and audio, you don’t have to! It all saves locally on your device.
